| Music Programs It is our philosophy that an effective music program contributes to the educational and personal enrichment of the whole child, and adds to the intellectual, multicultural, and social environment of the whole school. We believe that music is an aesthetic and global experience that every child has a right to earn and enjoy, and offer an outstanding music education program beginning in Kindergarten, and spanning a child’s full academic career at Gilbert Public Schools. Elementary Music Program Philosophy Statement The Gilbert Public Schools elementary music program recognizes music and the arts as an important part of a well-rounded education. It is our belief that a balanced music program consists of varied musical experiences such as singing, playing, listening, music reading, and expressive movement. Further, an effective elementary music program not only contributes to the education and personal enrichment of the whole child, but adds to the intellectual, multicultural, and social environment of the entire school. Therefore, we believe that music is an aesthetic and global experience that every child has a right to earn and enjoy. Purpose The purpose of the music program is to allow every student the opportunity to develop music skills, life skills, and an appreciation for music and the arts through participation in the Gilbert Public Schools elementary band, general music, and strings programs. Students in Grades 5 and 6 may choose a strings or band instrument or may participate in the general music program. Students at all grade levels perform in musicals events throughout the school year. Students will develop music skills which produce performance competencies that are appropriate to the student's music experience, development, and potential. Students will develop life skills such as teamwork, self-discipline, concentration, commitment, coordination of muscle motor groups,, visual and auditory development, positive self-image, listening skills, self-expression, and creativity. Students will develop an appreciation for music through hands-on experiences and listening to foster aesthetic awareness, enjoyment of the arts and exposure to a wide range of musical styles. Junior High Music Program At the Junior High level elective courses are offered to students interested in developing their musical skills. Students may select courses in Chorus, Orchestra, Band, and Jazz Band. Junior High students perform at school concerts, special events, and also participate in musical competitions. High School Music Program High school students participate in school events, concerts, and competitions. Orchestra Courses include: Concert Orchestra, Symphonic Strings, Symphony Orchestra, Golden Strings (GHS), Strolling Strings (HHS), Mesquite Strings (MHS). Vocal Courses include: Chorale, Women's Chorale, Advanced Women's Chorale, Concert Choir, Advanced Vocal Ensemble, Men's Chorale. BandCourses include: Varsity Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble |
