The Highland Counseling Department houses a Career Center to assist students in career and post-secondary planning. Services include and/or information is available on:
  • career interest/ability inventories
  • volunteering opportunities
  • career information
  • financial aid
  • apprenticeship programs
  • resumes/job seeking skills
  • colleges and universities
  • high school employment
  • vocational and technical opportunities/schools
  • summer enrichment opportunities

In addition to the above services, representatives from in-state universities and community colleges visit the Career Center on a monthly basis. Juniors and Seniors should listen to the daily announcements or check the schedule in the counseling office for dates and additional information.  Each grade level should check their specific calendar board in the Counseling Office for Career Center activities.
 
Options For Vocational/Technical Training

Employment opportunities for students who plan to go directly into the workforce are posted on the job board located in our Career Center. Help is available through the Career Center with resumes and job seeking skills.

Apprenticeship Programs offer on the job training for a specific skill or trade. In addition, many of the community colleges offer apprenticeship programs through partnerships with corporations. Examples: plumbing, refrigeration, mechanics, truck driving, electrician. www.azwaca.org

Trade and Technical training can be obtained through private schools that provide programs for specific careers. Students learn in job related settings and receive hands-on training. Examples: cosmetology, truck driving, pipe fitting trades, health assistants.

Community Colleges offer students collegiate opportunities to earn a 2 year degree as well as opportunity to transfer credits to universities. The length of study is dependent on the program chosen. Students who are still deciding on their plans after high school should check out community college opportunities in the HHS Career Center and at www.maricopa.edu.


HHS Vocational Programs

Highland High School offers a variety of vocational programs to students. Several classes are offered through the Agriculture, Business, Family and Consumer Sciences, Industrial Education, and Fine Arts programs. Students should review the course description book for specific offerings. Opportunities are available in the following areas:
  • animal science
  • interior design, fashion
  • commercial design
  • landscaping
  • culinary arts
  • digital media
  • welding
  • early childhood
  • photography (digital & 35mm)
  • agriculture
  • web page design
  • business & management
  • drafting
  • sports medicine
 
In addition, related work co-op classes offer opportunities for students during their senior year.

Gilbert Youth Employment Service (GYES)
GYES is a free community service sponsored by Gilbert Public Schools Vocational Education Department. GYES offers part-time employment opportunities while in school and full-time after graduation in a variety of work environments for youth ages 16 through 21. Pick up an application in counseling, complete the form, and return it to the Career Center Coordinator. All applications are processed and job referrals made through the GYES.
