Twice Exceptional (2e) Information & Resources

The term twice-exceptional (2e) refers to individuals who are gifted, but are also eligible for special education services. While these students demonstrate many characteristics associated with giftedness, areas of advanced aptitude may be masked by the challenges associated with their disability. Gilbert Public Schools recognizes the sometimes hidden potential of 2e students and is committed to fostering partnerships between special education case managers, gifted coaches, and classroom teachers to identify balanced supports that honor 2e students' capabilities and accommodate their learning, social/emotional, sensory/language-processing, and physical differences. Since the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) does not address gifted supports, campus staff may consider developing a Gifted Accommodation Plan (GAP) as an informal guide to the scaffolds that allow the student to access acceleration and enrichment opportunities in identified areas of giftedness.
