Changes to Instructional Minutes

Last spring, we learned that many of our surrounding districts were audited by the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) on their high school instructional minutes and their impact on Average Daily Membership (ADM).

In May and in October, a committee met to enumerate each comprehensive high school’s individual instructional minutes in order to determine if GPS meets the required 720 hours of instructional time needed to comply with ARS 15-901 to attain 100% of ADM funding. Based on the input of our principals, counselors and our internal auditor’s review, we have concluded that GPS comprehensive high schools are below the 720 hours required by the ADE.

The students identified are almost all senior students who take only 4 courses. We have communicated with other neighboring districts who have faced the same issue. We have determined that the least disruptive solution to our instructional hours deficit is to increase high school minimum course requirements from four to five courses. We will be communicating with our school community so that our GPS families, students and staff are aware of the changes to expect in the 2017-2018 school year.

We are currently working proactively with ADE to review our proposal to resolve the deficit in instructional hours to maintain compliance with ARS 15-901 and assure full ADM funding for every eligible student. It is our intent to share this information with you at this time prior to release of the 2017-2018 Course Description Book for high school students.

The Governing Board approved the revision of Policy IIE Secondary Student Schedules and Course Loads at the November 22nd Business Meeting which changed the minimum number of courses required for students to take each semester from four to five.

Please contact your student’s school counselor or principal if you have any questions.
