The National Association of Biology Teachers, in conjunction with Carolina Biological Supply Company, presented Highland High Biology teacher, Jamie Blum with the 2017 Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for the state of Arizona.

The honor identifies a teacher from each State who has made invaluable contributions to the profession, enhancing the teaching of biology. Criteria for the award include teaching ability, experience, innovation, initiative, positive student-teacher interactions, and collaboration in the school and community.

Ms. Blum is a biology teacher at Highland High School in Gilbert. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Arizona State University. Ms. Blum’s career in education spans twenty-six years, the past twenty-two of which have been spent teaching biology, including Honors courses, at Highland High, where she is also the coordinator and an instructor for Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), and the chapter sponsor for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). As the Biology Professional Learning Community leader, Ms. Blum also mentors her fellow educators and offers professional development sessions for new teachers.

“Ms. Blum is a valued member of our education community. She has a passion for science that she shares with her students while holding them to high standards of learning. Her engagement with and encouragement of students in the classroom are truly impressive. We are pleased to recognize her years of dedicated service,” said Dr. Daryn Stover, Arizona’s OBTA Director.
