Elementary Music Program

Philosophy Statement
The Gilbert Public Schools elementary music program recognizes music and the arts as an important part of a well-rounded education. It is our belief that a balanced music program consists of varied musical experiences such as singing, playing, listening, music reading, and expressive movement. Further, an effective elementary music program not only contributes to the education and personal enrichment of the whole child, but adds to the intellectual, multicultural, and social environment of the entire school. Therefore, we believe that music is an aesthetic and global experience that every child has a right to earn and enjoy.

Purpose
The purpose of the music program is to allow every student the opportunity to develop music skills, life skills, and an appreciation for music and the arts through participation in the Gilbert Public Schools elementary band, general music, and strings programs. Students in Grades 5 and 6 may choose a strings or band instrument or may participate in the general music program. Students at all grade levels perform in musicals events throughout the school year.

Students will develop music skills which produce performance competencies that are appropriate to the student's music experience, development, and potential.
Students will develop life skills such as teamwork, self-discipline, concentration, commitment, coordination of muscle motor groups,, visual and auditory development, positive self-image, listening skills, self-expression, and creativity.
Students will develop an appreciation for music through hands-on experiences and listening to foster aesthetic awareness, enjoyment of the arts and exposure to a wide range of musical styles.
