Governing Board Brief - September 11, 2018

The Governing Board met for a Brief Board Business Meeting and Work Study on Tuesday September 11, 2018.  The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm.

The following Consent Agenda items were approved with a 5-0 vote:

  • 2.02 Certified Personnel
  • 2.03 Support Staff Personnel
  • 2.04 Substitute Personnel
  • 2.05 Technology Services Reorganization / Regradation
  • 2.06 Nutrition Services Regradation
  • 2.07 Approval of 2018-2019 Parent Support Organizations
  • 2.08 Approval of Overnight and/or Out-of-State Travel
  • 2.09 Approval of Out of State Travel for Staff

The Brief Board Business Meeting was adjourned and the Work Study was called to order at 6:35pm.

5.01 School Spotlight - South Valley Junior High was presented by Principal Mr. Tim Cannon, with the following staff present: Assistant Principal,  Mr. Jonathan Schley; Dean of Students, Ms. Michelle Nakamura; and S.T.E.M. teacher Ms. Alexis Mason.

Highlights of the presentation included:

  • Recent  A+ School of Excellence, Arizona Education Foundation, and  A rating from Arizona Dept. of Education.

  • Data shows significant student growth achieved consistently.

  • ‘Where Everyone Belongs’ program supports student voice including 8th grader mentoring of 7th graders.

  • Counseling website - social emotional learning as well as student resources.

  • #PostThePositive - Digital citizenship lessons.

  • FUSE - S.T.E.M. program based on academic choice with a built in scaffolding system. Adding EPICS (Engineering Projects and Community Service) to the program.

  • 17 electives offered - 53% of students involved in the Performing Arts.

  • Technology used innovatively by staff, for example Nearpod has been used to produce over 10,000 lessons.

  • Enrollment increased 10% and doubled boundary exception students this year.

  • This was followed by presentation and discussion of 5.02  ‘Grade Enhancement’. This was presented by Ms. Barbara Newman, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning and Ms. Brandie Harris, Director of Assessment/Accountability. The plan presented is based on consultation with multiple stakeholders, and addresses grades 7-12.

This was then followed by a discussion of the ASBA Law Conference, recently attended by all five Governing Board members.

The Work Study was adjourned at 8:30pm.
