Ready to start a new career? Gilbert Public Schools is hosting a job fair at Highland High School on January 17, 2024, from 4-6 PM, recruiting teachers for the 2024/25 school year and all current open positions. All 39 GPS schools will be represented, including elementary (K-6), junior high (7-8), and high schools (9-12), as well as departments that are hiring, including Transportation, Nutrition Services, and Preschool. To help put your best foot forward, here are five tips that could help you stand out at the job fair!

  1. First Impressions Count: While it may seem like an outdated tradition, firm handshakes make an important first impression that expresses your interest in a position while conveying confidence. Many candidates mistakenly introduce themselves with a weak handshake, which may lead recruiters to believe they are intimidated or insecure. It is also important to remember to not give a handshake that is too strong!

  2. Confident Body Language: Similar to a firm handshake, it is important to be mindful of body language. Maintain good posture, make eye contact, and convey enthusiasm while at any job fair. Positive and open body language tells recruiters that you possess the interpersonal skills required for working in education.

  3. Be Open to Opportunities: While you may have a preference for working in a specific job, grade, or subject, show your flexibility by expressing interest in various positions within Gilbert Public Schools. This demonstrates your adaptability and willingness to contribute to the diverse educational needs of the district. It is also much easier to transfer into different positions within the district than it is to find a position externally.

  4. Do Your Research: Research Gilbert Public Schools to showcase your knowledge of the district and its many schools. Understanding GPS's educational philosophy, recent achievements, and the unique aspects of each school will set you apart as a candidate genuinely invested in the district.

  5. Ask Thoughtful Questions: Prepare a list of questions that reflect your interest in joining the GPS family. Inquire about the district's educational initiatives, support systems for employees, and opportunities for professional development. Thoughtful questions not only showcase your enthusiasm but also help you make an informed decision about your potential future with GPS.

The GPS job fair is a prime opportunity to take the first step toward a rewarding career in education. By mastering the art of handshakes, utilizing positive body language, embracing diverse opportunities, learning about GPS, and asking thoughtful questions, you can make a memorable impression on GPS recruiters.
