Academic Excellence in Every Classroom: GPS Educators Earn National Board Certification

Tristan Chavez

Gilbert Public Schools (GPS) is proud to recognize six educators who have earned or maintained National Board Certification for the 2026 school year, a distinction achieved by approximately 3% of teachers nationwide.

National Board Certification is considered the highest professional credential in education. The process of earning the certification is grounded in the National Board’s Five Core Propositions and is designed to collect clear evidence of accomplished teaching practice. Candidates complete four rigorous components - a computer-based assessment measuring content knowledge and three portfolio entries demonstrating differentiation in instruction, teaching practice, learning environment, and reflective professional decision-making.

The certification process can take one to five years to complete and requires educators to demonstrate measurable impact on student learning. It offers 25 certificate areas structured by developmental level and discipline, ensuring that certification reflects deep subject expertise and a strong understanding of how students learn.

With this year’s newly certified and maintained educators, Gilbert Public Schools now has 37 teachers and staff members with National Board Certification.

This year’s recognized educators include:

  • Greg Stafford, Desert Ridge High School, Physics and AP Physics (Maintained Certification)
  • Melanie Whitfield, Highland Junior High, History & Social Sciences and Honors History & Social Sciences (Newly Certified)
  • Joanna Kollpainter, Highland High School, Practical Applications of Math, Practical Applications of Science, and Communication Skills (Newly Certified)
  • Meghan Gray, Gilbert High School, International Baccalaureate Coordinator (Newly Certified)
  • Melanie Volz, Playa Del Rey Elementary, Reading Specialist (Maintained Certification)
  • Abigail Wheatfill, Gilbert District Office, Instructional Specialist (Maintained Certification)
