From Blueprint to Build: Cabinetmaking CTE Classes Prepare Students for the Professional World

In today’s world, the ability to solve complex problems with both precision and creativity is a skill needed more than ever. The Cabinetmaking Career & Technical Education (CTE) program provides students with a unique opportunity to develop these skills by blending technical mastery with real-world business applications. Available at Highland High and Mesquite High, this program is a multi-year experience that transforms students into skilled craftsmen ready for the professional world.

In their first year, students begin by learning foundational skills, using automated cutting machines to complete laser-based projects and small furniture pieces. This initial introduction helps students get comfortable in a shop environment, allowing them to move from basic assembly to the more technical parts of the trade.

By the second year, the focus shifts toward professional standards. Students earn their OSHA 10 certification, a nationally recognized credential that proves they can navigate a high-risk work environment safely. While Cabinetmaking is a two-year CTE program, a third-year course is available to students. Those who return for a third year are tasked with interpreting complex blueprints and managing real-world constraints. From mastering a lathe to achieve a perfect cut to exploring modern materials like epoxy and glass, the third-year experience mimics the demands of a professional custom shop.

“This is a class where students get hands-on applications of real-world learning to solve real-world problems,” says Chris Askew, the Cabinetmaking teacher at Highland High. “Everything is done through a strong focus on safety, and students are introduced to career opportunities they can take with them down the road.”

Beyond the technical work, the curriculum emphasizes the "business of building." Every project is treated like a professional contract, requiring students to calculate costs and budget for their materials. This focus on financial literacy ensures that students understand the business components of a project before they ever enter the workforce. Ultimately, this prepares students for the administrative side of careers in general contracting, architecture, or project management.

“Every project includes costs and calculations, so you learn how to budget and plan. That’s going to help later in life, not just in this class,” shared Lucas Martin, a Senior at Highland High.

While the technical skills are the most visible, the program also teaches essential life skills like communication and teamwork. One student notes that the shop environment requires constant collaboration. “You’re talking with your peers a lot to make sure everything is okay and everyone is safe,” shared a Junior in the program.
CTE programs at GPS are designed to prepare students for life after high school. Across the district, students who complete CTE programs maintain a 97.4% graduation rate, and 75% of graduates find work in a career related to their program within just six months of graduation.

By combining professional standards with multiple pathways to success - from architecture to custom fabrication - the Cabinetmaking program helps students discover their strengths and build their future from the ground up.
