GPS Welcomes 5 New Principals for the 2026–2027 School Year

The Gilbert Public Schools (GPS) family is excited to announce the appointment of five new principals across the district for the upcoming 2026–2027 school year. These dedicated leaders bring decades of combined educational experience, a strong focus on community partnerships, and a deep passion for fostering student growth.

Trent Bender, Boulder Creek Elementary School

Principal Trent Bender is excited to lead the Bulldog family at Boulder Creek Elementary. Crediting the impactful teachers and coaches in his own life, Bender is passionate about active learning and making sure school is both a fun and rewarding experience where milestones are celebrated.

Erica Helfrey, Campo Verde High School

Erica Helfrey is a familiar face to Campo Verde High, having called the campus home for the past ten years. Inspired to enter education by her own high school teachers who pushed her to see her potential, Helfrey is committed to building a campus culture that focuses on genuine human connection and collaborative growth.

"I am not coming in to change what is working - I am coming in to protect it and keep it growing," Helfrey stated. "Academic excellence matters deeply, but so does helping a young person learn how to work through hard things, build relationships, advocate for themselves, and find their place in the world. The best schools do both."

Elyse Torbert, Gilbert Classical Academy

Gilbert Classical Academy welcomes Principal Elyse Torbert to the Spartan family. The daughter of a longtime reading specialist, Torbert spent her childhood weekends in a classroom and has dedicated nearly 30 years to public education. She views her leadership role as a systems-based opportunity to maximize potential for both staff and students.

"Every person who walks on campus should be energized and highly motivated to contribute to the culture of excellence that we will continue to build," Torbert shared. "I aim to make this desire a reality by creating a safe learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and taking risks, but also an academically rigorous environment that invites students to move past their current comfort zone."

Kari Castro, Mesquite High School

Kari Castro is excited to step into the role of Principal at Mesquite High School, aiming to help students grow into productive adults. Becoming a parent inspired Castro to enter education, driving her mission to ensure all children receive the same high-quality opportunities she desires for her own daughters.

Johnny Stegall, Mesquite Junior High School

Mesquite Junior High’s new principal Johnny Stegall is well–known on campus, having served as the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director for the school. Stegall says he is inspired by the “light bulb moment” when a student learns and understands something. He aims to channel the natural energy, curiosity, and creativity of his students into a passion for education and community.

"In everything I do, I want our Mustangs to know that I care," said Stegall. "I care about both parent and student well-being, I care about their experience, and I care to make Mesquite Junior a better place for all. I believe a school can provide an opportunity for all students to thrive based on their interests and problem-solving skills."
