Patterson Elementary Teacher Wins A+ Teacher for Her Impact on Students
Paula Dunnett, a teacher at Patterson Elementary School, was recently honored as the 12 News A+ Teacher, a monthly award that recognizes educators who actively make a positive impact in the lives of their students and peers.
In her 10th year at Patterson Elementary, Dunnett offers a wealth of experience across various grade levels and a passion for student growth to her role. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program Coordinator, Dunnett plays a crucial role in guiding Patterson Elementary on its journey as an IB Candidate School.
"I love that International Baccalaureate connects student learning to their lives outside of school through relevant, engaging, and challenging learning experiences," shares Dunnett. "This allows students to think critically, problem solve, and take action both inside and outside of school."
As an IB Candidate School, Patterson Elementary is actively engaged in the authorization process. This involves the completion of comprehensive tasks including required professional development for all staff, collaboration to develop or update school policies and curriculums to align with the IB Primary Years Programme, the refinement of processes and practices to support inquiry-based learning and student-centered education, and continuous exploration of how IB will be most effectively implemented within the unique context of the school. Patterson Elementary is in the final of four stages of this process, currently awaiting IB’s decision on authorization.
"It has been exciting to see the transformation in instruction and learning that is happening at Patterson," Dunnett added. "Our school community has worked extremely hard to ensure a top-notch education for all of our learners."
Holding a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Indiana University and a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from Purdue University, Dunnett is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Teaching and Learning with an Emphasis on Adult Learning from Grand Canyon University.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dunnett cherishes spending quality time with her family, enjoying activities like board games, hiking, biking, and vacations.
Paula Dunnett's commitment to excellence, her passion for student success, and her dedication to the IB philosophy make her a true inspiration to her colleagues, students, and the entire Gilbert Public Schools family.
