Two students, Ava Goodwin of Gilbert Classical Academy (GCA) and Brooklyn Linarte of Campo Verde High, have earned first and third place in the Green Gilbert Artwork Contest, respectively. Their artwork, which aims to promote green living and a more sustainable community, will be showcased on the side of trash and recycling trucks throughout the Town of Gilbert.

Ava Goodwin's design, which features a large, vibrant tree standing above Earth with the words “Think Green Act Clean” between them, secured her first place in the competition for the second year in a row. “I wanted to show something that emphasized the need for everyone to recycle and be environmentally friendly,” said Goodwin, a sophomore at Gilbert Classical Academy.

Noting that she doesn’t normally like to showcase her work, Ava expressed how proud she is of herself for participating in and winning the Green Gilbert Artwork contest for the second time, giving credit to her teacher at GCA. “Mrs. Culley has really made art fun and she’s pushed me to express myself more through different mediums. I’ve learned a lot of new skills and I feel that I’ve really evolved as an artist,” added Goodwin.

“She’s such a phenomenal artist that I actually invited her to go straight into AP Art next year,” shared Phaedra Culley, a teacher at GCA. “It’s incredible to watch her expressions and ideas come to life on the paper.”

Brooklyn Linarte’s design, a light bulb that has a cactus and desert landscape inside of it with the slogan “Think Green, Act Clean”, earned her third place in the Green Gilbert Artwork Contest. “The light bulb is a symbol for new ideas, so I wanted to use that to emphasize that we as a community can preserve the desert and ecosystem,” said Linarte.

“I was so excited for Brooklyn. I love it when my students participate in local contests like this because it gives them a chance to interact with our community and show off how talented they are,” said Lindsey Wallace, a teacher at Campo Verde High. “I'm lucky to have been a part of Brooklyn's journey with photography and design over the past 3 years. She's grown so much in her ability and her talent and I couldn’t be more proud of her.”
