In honor of the award from the Arizona Educational Foundation, Mesquite Elementary recently held a ceremony on the school’s lawn to celebrate. It was led by Principal Dawn Koberstein.

“Mesquite, I truly am proud of you, and we really do have a special place,” Koberstein said.

The celebration included Mesquite students, staff, teachers, families, AEF™ representatives, and GPS district leadership. The process to become an A+ School of Excellence™ was not an easy feat, but it was well earned. A+ Schools of Excellence™ are exceptional public schools in Arizona that continually increase the public’s confidence and have high parent engagement. They are learning-centered, model quality and equality, and use innovative instruction in the classroom to keep students engaged in learning.

“I couldn’t be more proud to be the principal here at Mesquite, to lead and work with the very best staff,” Koberstein said.

The event was truly a celebration with singing and dancing. Students and teachers wore gray and blue A+ t-shirts. A few students shared with everyone what they love most about their school, and GPS Superintendent Dr. Shane McCord also reflected on his own memories. He began his career with GPS at Mesquite Elementary, working as a fourth grade teacher.

“What an honor it is to be here 27 years later,” he said, “and acknowledge something we’ve known for 27 years that Mesquite elementary is one of the very best schools in Arizona.”

Mesquite Elementary is also home to the Gilbert Public Schools Performance Academy for 4th-8th grade students. The Performance Academy allows students who are elite athletes or in the performing arts to experience everything a school has to offer while maintaining their training and competitive schedule.
