Future leaders of their community and beyond. Gilbert High School celebrated a new class of seniors graduating from the International Baccalaureate® Programme. For the past two years, these students have stretched themselves and the way they think about the world around them. Through rigorous coursework, the students learned how to become better communicators, thinkers and risk-takers. They are more reflective, open-minded, curious and principled. Now that they have completed the two-year program, they are heading out into the world to spark change.
“We are immensely proud of you individuals for sticking it through,” said Brendan Keyes, the IB Diploma Coordinator at Gilbert High, “We’re just thrilled to see where you are going next.”
As part of the IB Programme, seniors are required to do an extended essay. They spent about a year writing the 4,000 word original research paper. They selected a topic of their choosing from areas like history, English, psychology and biology, and then Ms. Kaylee Peelen, one of their teachers, guided them through the writing process. She described the extended essay as a shorter version of a master’s dissertation, which would typically be written by a university-level student.
“It’s one of the reasons that I’m incredibly proud of every one of you. You did it! You crossed the finish line,” Peelen said.
At the IB Celebration Night, students were able to present their extended essay question to the audience and share some of their favorite memories from being in the program. They also received an IB medal symbolizing their completion of the program. After the presentation with the seniors, families and guests could check out the ‘Theory of Knowledge’ gallery to learn more about projects done by juniors in the program.
