Governing Board Brief - June 9, 2020

The Governing Board met for their scheduled work-study and brief board business meeting on, Tuesday, June 9, 2020.  The meeting began at 6:30 pm with the following statement from Governing Board President, Dr. Charles Santa-Cruz.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the events that have enveloped our community, our state, our nation, and indeed the world.  The struggle for equality and justice has been a part of this nation’s history since its inception. As a society, we must continue to strive to become that more perfect union we all desire.  Gilbert Public Schools is not immune to the challenges that have sparked the protests that have occurred throughout our country.  We must always seek to establish a climate and culture that is inclusive and just. We must become a community that honors and respects the contributions of all people regardless of their social and economic status. A community is rich when it embraces its capacity to utilize the skills and talents of all individuals.  

As Martin Luther King Jr. stated:

“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable…Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concerns of dedicated individuals.”

In recent days and weeks we have all watched events that have reminded us that the progress we have made as a society is not enough. We have witnessed the passionate demonstration of people of all races and ethnic backgrounds joined together and demanding equality and justice for all people. In the words “Black Lives Matter,”  we have been reminded that there is still a great deal of work that must be done to establish that more perfect union in our schools, our communities, our state, and in our nation.  The Gilbert Unified School District is deeply committed to fostering and embracing the ideals of social justice, equality, and inclusiveness.  We reject and repudiate discrimination, hate, and racism in all of its forms.  We will continue to promote and endorse the positive efforts of students, educators, parents, and community members to establish a climate and culture on all of our campuses that honors and respects the dignity and worth of all human beings. 

In closing, I would like to echo the words of Desmond Tutu:

“Exclusion is never the way forward on our shared paths to freedom and justice.”

The events of the past days and weeks, sparked by the death of George Floyd, should serve to remind us that our work is not finished until we truly accept the truth that America is beautiful, rich, and strong because of its diversity.   

The statement was supported by all Board members and Superintendent, Dr. Shane McCord.

The meeting continued with a Task Force Update presented by Dr. Barbara Newman, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning.  Leaders of the Task Force Sub-Committees were present to answer questions.

A Global Academy Update presentation followed, presented by Dr. Peter Bartenan, Global Academy Blended Learning Coordinator.

The work-study was adjourned at 8:17 pm.

The brief business meeting was called to order at 8:23 pm.

The business meeting began with a presentation on the Proposed 2020-21 Budget.  This was presented by Ms. Bonnie J. Betz, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services.

6.06 Baby Grand Piano Purchase, Service & Warranty - IFB #20-43-06-25

6.07 Approval of AIA and CTSO High School Overnight and/or Out-of-State Travel

The following action agenda items were approved with 5-0 votes:

7.01 Advertisement for FY 2021 Budget Summary and Hearing Notice

7.02 Approval to Purchase the Florida Virtual Online Curriculum Platform, Grades K-12

7.03 Approval of Vacation days in Excess of 2019-2020 Memorandum of Understanding Allowances
