Governing Board Brief - July 28, 2020
The Governing Board met for a scheduled board business meeting, Tuesday July 28, 2020. The meeting was called to order at 6:00pm.
The meeting began with the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Shane McCord highlighted the following:
- Our new teachers reported for work today, we held small group virtual meetings to welcome 130 teachers, and we are excited to welcome them to the GPS family.
- Congratulations - Thrive www.gilbertschools.net/thrive has won a National Merit Award from the National School PR Association (NSPRA).
- Bond rating - Update on recent successful Bond sale and benefit of current Moody rating.
- School year begins August 5th, and will be something we have never experienced before. We miss our children and we miss our staff. Please be assured we are doing all we can to look out for the best interests of our students and our staff and look forward to a successful school year.
Requests to speak with the Governing Board followed. There were 20 requests to speak.
The Monthly Budget Report and FY 2020 3rd Quarter Financial Report followed, presented by Ms. Bonnie J. Betz, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services.
There was then a Presentation of Governor Ducey’s most recent Executive Order by Superintendent, Dr. Shane McCord. The Governing Board discussed.
The Consent Agenda was approved with a 5-0 vote :
6.02 Approval of Minutes for Regular Board Meeting on June 23, 2020 and Special Board Meeting on June 30, 2020

7.04 Approval of Resolution regarding Governor Ducey's Executive Order
The following Action Agenda item was discussed by the Governing Board:
7.03 Discussion and possible Action regarding the Reopening of Schools for the 2020-2021 School Year
The following motion was then approved with a 3-2 vote:
‘Gilbert Public Schools will begin in-person classes upon meeting the Arizona Department of Health Services guidelines. At such time, the board will provide teachers, administrators, and parents a one-week notice to plan and implement their reopening strategy. Beginning August 5 and until the guidelines are met, courses will be held online. The board will re-evaluate September 22 if the criteria has not been previously met.’
