Governing Board Brief - October 27, 2020

The Gilbert Public Schools Governing Board met for a scheduled Governing Board business meeting on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

The meeting began with an Executive Session at 5:00 pm - discussion or consideration of matters relating to school safety operations or school safety plans or programs.

The business meeting was called to order at 6:05pm.

Update: Next week’s Governing Board meeting will be on Wednesday, November 4 (due to election day being on Tuesday).
Five schools have been awarded the 2020 A+ School of Excellence award from Arizona Educational Foundation - Congratulations to Ashland Ranch Elementary, Campo Verde High, Carol Rae Ranch Elementary, Gilbert Classical Academy, and Highland High.
Best of Gilbert and East Valley 2020 - Gilbert Public Schools has been awarded the 2020 Best Public School District in the East Valley.  Earlier in the year GPS also won the following in 2020 Best of Gilbert - Best Childcare Center - VIK and Building Blocks, Best High School Teacher - Nick Cornell (Campo Verde), Best Mascot - Highland Hawk, Best Public School District, and Best Place to Work  - Congratulations to all of our staff for these awards, they are well deserved.
2020-2021 Administrator Collaborative Learning Days - Vicki Jones and her department along with consultant Lissa Pijanowski have redesigned five of our administrator meetings into collaborative learning days. To keep the group manageable in size they have been split into smaller groups receiving training on different days.
Construction is well underway for the front office security improvements at Campo Verde High School, Highland High School, and Desert Ridge High School. Modeling after Mesquite High School’s entryway, the other high schools will look similar by the second semester. Construction has also started at Canyon Valley High School to utilize the space at the old Power Base Transportation Center. Canyon Valley will have two new science classrooms, in addition to two other regular classrooms and office/conference room space.

The Board approved the addition of a Work Study session on Thursday October 29th, to discuss health benchmarks.

There was one request to speak to the Governing Board.

The monthly budget report followed, presented by Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, Ms. Bonnie J. Betz.

Dr. Shane McCord, Superintendent, presented Arizona Department of Health Service (ADHS) Health Benchmark updates.  Dr. McCord highlighted a recent change to the ADHS dashboard and the benchmarks they are using to report data.  For more details please view the recording of the meeting.

The following Consent Agenda was approved with a 5-0 vote.
