Governing Board Brief - September 25, 2019

The Governing Board met for their monthly Regular Board Meeting on September 25, 2019. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm.

The meeting began with Superintendent’s Recognitions:

  • Congratulations to Mr. Curtis Willems, Highland High - Arizona Agriculture Teachers Association Teacher of the Year
  • Thank you to Donna Peterson and Friends of Gilbert Libraries for their donation of over $160,000 to provide books for GPS schools.
  • Congratulations to Mrs. Lynnea Bahm, Math teacher, Campo Verde High - Arizona State Finalist for Presidential Awards of Excellence in teaching Math and Science.

The Superintendent’s Report followed.  Superintendent, Dr. Shane McCord highlighted the following:

  • Congratulations to our Gilbert Public Schools Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence award winners – 
    • Volunteer from Canyon Rim Elementary School, Mr. Steven Weigley, who received the Sheila Rogers Uggetti Volunteer of the Year Award
    • Ms. Veronica Duran from Augusta Ranch Elementary School, who received the Sharon Orr Support Staff of the Year Award, and;
    • Ms. Tanecia Cornwall-Elysee from Gilbert Elementary School, who received the Dr. Wally Delecki Educator of the Year Award.d
  • There are three remaining Bond and Override Information Sessions for the public scheduled from 6:00-7:00 pm in the school library, as follows;
    • Thursday, September 26 at Gilbert High School 
    • Thursday, October 3 at Desert Ridge High School
    • Thursday, October 17 at Campo Verde High School
  • Appreciation for the district’s Crisis Team who have been an incredible support to students and staff over the last month.

The Monthly Budget Report followed, presented by Ms. Bonnie Betz, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services.  Ms. Betz was available to answer questions from the Board.

The ‘Consent Agenda’ was approved with the exception of 7.03 and 7.07, with a 5-0 vote.

Following a brief discussion of changes, Item 7.03 and 7.07 were approved with a 5-0 vote.

The ‘Action Item’ agenda followed.

Action Item 8.01- Approval of Sole Source Determination for Fieldprint was approved with a 5-0 vote.  Mr. Shawn McIntosh, Executive Director of Elementary OTM was available for questions from the Governing Board.

The following ‘Action Items’ were approved with a 5-0 vote:

  • 8.02 Policy Development: Second Read and Adoption of Policy EEAA - Walkers and Riders
  • 8.03 Policy Development: Second Read and Adoption of Policy JICL - Dating Abuse
  • 8.04 Policy Development: Second Read and Adoption of Policy JJIB - Interscholastic Sports
  • 8.05 Policy Development: Second Read and Adoption of Policy JL - Student Wellness

The following ‘Action Items’ were approved with a 5-0 vote:

  • 8.06 Policy Development: First Read of Policy BEDH - Public Participation in Board Meetings
  • 8.07 Policy Development: First Read of Policy GBEAA - Staff Conflict of Interest
  • 8.08 Policy Development: First Read of Policy GBI - Staff Participation in Political Activities
  • 8.09 Policy Development: First Read of Policy GCBA - Professional Staff Salary Schedules
  • 8.10 Policy Development: First Read of Policy GCCG - Professional Staff Voluntary Transfer of Accrued Sick Leave

The following ‘Action Items’ were approved with a 5-0 vote:
