Governing Board Brief - November 19, 2019

The Governing Board met for their regular monthly business meeting on Tuesday, November 19, 2019.  

The meeting began with a call to the Executive Session at 5:45 pm for discussion or consideration of Superintendent Performance Standards.

The meeting was then called to order at 6:30 pm.

The meeting began with the Superintendent’s Recognitions:

Mr. Kienitz was recognized for his service to GPS and our students for over twenty years.

  • Mr. John Kienitz - a security guard at Campo Verde, Gilbert High, and Governing Board meetings - Mr. Kienitz was recognized for his service to GPS and our students for over twenty years.  

Mr. George Pettit from Gilbert Rotary was recognized for the Rotary Club’s 3rd-grade dictionary program

  • Mr. George Pettit from Gilbert Rotary was recognized for the Rotary Club’s 3rd-grade dictionary program, now in its 12th year, with over 32,000 dictionaries provided to GPS 3rd graders across the district.

Dr. Susan Harrison and Ms. Janifer Gorney from the East Valley Assistance League

  • Dr. Susan Harrison and Ms. Janifer Gorney were present from the East Valley Assistance League to be recognized for their ongoing commitment to supporting GPS students and families in need.

Campo Verde Swim and Dive team

  • Campo Verde Swim and Dive team were recognized for their achievements this season including Coach Dave Peters (Girls Division II AZ State Swim Coach of the Year); Boys Division II State Champions and Girls Division II State Runners-up.

Desert Ridge High Swim and Dive team

  • Desert Ridge High Swim and Dive team were recognized for their achievements this season including Coach Brock Harr (Division I AZ State Swim Coach of the Year); Essisas Smith 100 Fly State Champion, and Luke Walker 200IM State Champion.

Mesquite High girls badminton team with Coach Mark Hannah

  • Mesquite High girls badminton team was present with Coach Mark Hannah to be recognized as Girls Badminton State Champions.

The Superintendent’s Report followed.  Dr. Shane McCord highlighted the following:

  • Thank you to Gilbert Public Schools boundaries voters and community for passing the Bond and Override.  Thank you all for your support.
  • Three schools were recognized last week for supporting Gilbert Education Foundation (GEF) fundraising initiatives: Patterson Elementary, Highland High, and Greenfield Elementary.  The money awarded will be used for campus projects for the students.
  • Gilbert Days Parade is this Saturday, November 23rd, all 40 schools will be represented including four marching bands.  Thank you to Campo Verde for making the district float this year.

Requests to speak to the Governing Board followed.  There was one request to speak.

The Monthly Budget followed, presented by Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, Ms. Bonnie Betz. 

Item 8.06 Approve Completion of Mesquite High School Security Entry Project was removed from the agenda and tabled for the next meeting.

The Consent Agenda was approved with a 5-0 vote.
