Yes, You CAN Take PE Online

Yes, You CAN take PE Online - Global Academy

We are often given a strange look when we tell students and parents that we offer online PE. “Surely,” they say, “you are kidding.” We’re not.

In fact, Global Academy offers FIVE different PE options for our junior high and high school students. And starting in August 2020, we’ll be adding a sixth. How do we do it? Keep reading to find out!

Junior High (Grades 7-8)

Global offers two semesters of PE for junior high students, enough to fulfill the requirements of our junior high schools. Both classes teach the foundational knowledge, skills, and values that students need to know to develop a physically active lifestyle.

Topics include safety rules for exercise, how to improve sports skills, how different activities target different body parts, and how to set goals (source: course syllabus). Students keep a log of their activities and complete assignments and projects related to sports, nutrition, and making good choices.

Beginning in August 2020 we will be launching an Independent PE class for students involved in competitive sports. Students will receive a half credit for logging 100 hours of practice and competition.

High School (Grades 9-12)

We offer three different high school classes. Personal fitness (1 semester) focuses on students’ conditioning. In this class, students determine their fitness level and learn about health risk factors. They they engage in cardiovascular exercise, muscular exercises, and managing weight.  This class requires the highest level of physical activity compared to all of our PE offerings for high school.

Fitness Lifestyle Design aims to teach students about establishing fitness goals, monitoring nutrition, shopping for food in a way that supports healthy living, and designing an exercise plan. There is a bit of exercise that students must practice and log.

Health Opportunities through Physical Education (HOPE) is a year-long class where students learn how to plan physical activities into their daily lives, develop a strong body and mind, study nutrition, drugs, and alcohol, and learn how to make positive choices. The major project is a wellness plan that students develop and refine throughout the course.

Online PE classes are intense and require a lot of work, but they’re a popular option for students who can’t or won’t participate in traditional PE.
