Important Update: July 29, 2020

Dear GPS parents and families,

Thank you for your patience as we take the time to thoroughly review the executive order issued by Governor Ducey, last Thursday July 23rd, outlining new parameters for the 2020/21 school year.

Further to the executive order, our Gilbert Public Schools Governing Board met for a regular scheduled meeting last night, July 28th.  As part of the meeting the Governing Board discussed reopening schools and approved the following motion:

Gilbert Public Schools will begin in-person classes upon meeting the Arizona Department of Health Services guidelines.  At such time, the board will provide teachers, administrators, and parents a one-week notice to plan and implement their reopening strategy.  Beginning August 5 and until the guidelines are met, courses will be held online.  The board will re-evaluate September 22 if the criteria has not been previously met.

Below you will find key information:

  • All students will begin the school year August 5th, learning online.
  • The district will continue to review and seek guidance regarding the executive order and will update our parents and families accordingly.
  • On or before August 7th our school district will be provided with health benchmarks (referred to as criteria above) by the Arizona Department of Health to determine when we are able to open for in-person instruction.  If the benchmark data determines that this is not possible, all students will continue to learn online until such time as the benchmark data is met and it is deemed appropriate to return to in-person instruction on our campuses.
  • The health benchmark data, provided by the Arizona Department of Health, will continue to be reviewed by administration daily.
  • At such time as the benchmark data is met and it is deemed appropriate to return to in-person instruction on our campuses parents will be provided at least one week’s notice that the schools are reopening.
  • GPS will develop a face coverings policy that will be brought to the Governing Board for approval, prior to the first date of in-person instruction, as per the executive order.

Please expect a follow-up communication by the end of this week to update our families on how we can all prepare for the beginning of the school year, August 5th, 2020.  Thank you for your continued support of Gilbert Public Schools.
