This course will address how events in United States history have influenced the role and structure of government, and demonstrate an understanding of how the past influences the present and future. Topics include: philosophical and historical foundations of the American political system, how the framers created the Constitution, how the Constitution has been changed, how the Constitution shaped American institutions and practices, the Bill of Rights, and challenges in the 21st century. Students will participate in a simulated congressional hearing as a culminating activity.
