This course enables highly motivated students to do college level work in the areas of reading and analyzing notated music and aural training. Particular emphasis will be placed upon developing listening skills, sight singing ability, and knowledge of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and other compositional devices. The successful student will be endowed with the skills necessary to function intelligently in any musical situation. It is strongly encouraged, but not required, that the music theory student be concurrently enrolled in a performance ensemble for the purpose of applying the skills learned in the class to an active musical environment. This course is designed to prepare students to successfully complete the Advanced Placement Exam in May.
