Grading Practices
Grading Beliefs and Practices
Grades reflect student’s cumulative growth on standards. Expectation of a minimum of 2 grades entered/week.
Grades communicate proficiency, mastery, and understanding of standards and skills as outlined by the Arizona Academic Standards. Grades are a reflection of student learning, not student behavior or compliance. Students are provided multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning in order to ensure an accurate reflection of student mastery. The grade reflects student proficiency at the end of the grading period. Assignments (formatives) are designed to measure learning. Assessments (summatives) are designed to measure proficiency. Homework and some classwork is designed to practice a taught skill. Grades will be updated weekly, with at least two grade updates each week. Graded work will be returned in a timely manner with actionable feedback.
Retakes/Redos
What can be retaken/replaced?
Assessments and/or assignments are eligible for replacement; see teacher syllabus. Final summative assessments, representing cummulative learning at the end of a semester, cannot be retaken. Examples: Semester Finals, Final Summative Assessments (End of Semester), Project Based Assessments. The replacement does not have to be the same assignment/assessment but must measure the same standard(s).
Who is eligible?
All students, in all courses are eligible for retakes/grade replacement.
What is the timeline and process?
Students are provided multiple opportunities to demonstrate their proficiency on the standards before a summative assessment. Students must advocate for themselves by contacting their teacher to initate the retake/grade replacement process. Students must complete the agreed upon requirements. Students should take advantage of tutoring opportunities and practice work for additional learning/reteaching. Students should be allowed to complete missing assignments within reasonably established timelines for full credit.
How is the grade improved?
Scores that are higher than the original will replace the initial attempt.
