School Letter Grades

Dear Gilbert Public Schools Families,

The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) released 2023-24 School Letter Grades today. The state’s ‘Accountability System’ is designed to empower schools to achieve and increase success for their students by providing districts and schools with feedback on areas of strength and those that may need additional focus and enrichment.

Schools earn a letter grade based on a range of metrics including proficiency and growth in key subject areas, graduation rates, subgroup proficiency improvement, acceleration and readiness measures, and college and career readiness indicators.

The Letter Grades used are as follows:

A = Excellent
B = Highly Performing
C = Performing
D = Minimally Performing 
F = Failing

In Gilbert Public Schools we are extremely proud of our students and staff and their achievements. For the 2023-24 school year Gilbert Public Schools has achieved an ‘A’ letter grade for our school district. Further, all GPS schools have achieved either an ‘A’ or ‘B’ letter grade, rating them as excellent or highly performing by the Arizona Department of Education, listed below. This achievement is a reflection of the hard work of our students, staff, and families.

As a district we appreciate everything that goes into these assessments and recognize the ‘Letter Grade’ system as a useful measure of academic progress and achievement providing opportunities for celebration and also for continued improvement. We are proud to report that this year has been another year of growth and achievement for our students and schools, with scores improving at both the school and district level. We look forward to continuing to improve, with our goal of delivering academic excellence for all students front and center.

In Gilbert Public Schools we are extremely proud of all of our students and staff and their achievements. The majority of our schools, 92%, achieved an A or B letter grade for 2022-23, rating them as excellent or highly performing by the Arizona Department of Education; 23 of our schools received an ‘A’. This is a reflection of the hard work of our students, staff, and families. As a district, we appreciate everything that goes into these assessments and recognize the ‘Letter Grade’ system as a useful measure of academic progress and achievement, providing opportunities for celebration and also for continued improvement.  

In addition, this year, Arizona has reinstated letter grades for districts. We are delighted to announce that Gilbert Public Schools has been recognized with an 'A'-rating by the Arizona Department of Education for the 2022/23 school year.

Our goal has always been and will continue to be to put our students first, delivering a well-rounded, high-quality educational experience for all, with a focus on delivering academic excellence for all students. The majority of our schools, 87%, achieved an A or B letter grade for 2021-22, rating them as excellent or highly performing by the Arizona Department of Education; 21 of our schools received an ‘A’.  As a district, we appreciate everything that goes into these assessments and recognize the ‘Letter Grade’ system as a useful measure of academic progress, providing opportunities for celebration and also for continued improvement.  

We also acknowledge that the ‘Letter Grades’ work alongside other measurements of the high-performing culture and climate that our dedicated staff create every day on all of our campuses.  Our goal has always been and will continue to be to put our students first, delivering a well-rounded, high-quality educational experience for all.

Dear Gilbert Public Schools Families,

The Arizona Department of Education released 2019 School Letter Grades this week.  The state’s Accountability System is designed to empower schools to achieve and increase success for their students. The system provides districts and schools with feedback on areas of strength and those that may need additional focus and enrichment.  The system is intended to be utilized to help schools and districts improve student outcomes, communicate with families to better understand how their school is performing and to help identify schools and districts that may be in need of support.  

The system quantitatively measures student proficiency and annual growth in key areas as well as student readiness for whatever is next in their education or career.  

Schools earn a letter grade based on a range of metrics including:

• Proficiency in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science
• Subgroup Proficiency Improvement
• Growth in English Language Arts and Mathematics
• Proficiency and Growth of English Language Learners
• High School Graduation Rate
• Acceleration and Readiness Measures, consisting of several items including reduction of chronic absenteeism and the improved growth of subgroups
• College and Career Readiness Indicators, including minimum thresholds on ACT/SAT, ASVAB, AP Tests, earning CTE industry credentials, certificates, or licenses.

Every year, each elementary, junior high, and high school will receive a 'Letter Grade'.  These designations will use quantitative and qualitative data to assess performance.  

The Letter Grades used are as follows:

A = Excellent

B = Highly Performing

C = Performing

D = Minimally Performing 

F = Failing

Gilbert Public Schools is very proud of our students and staff. While this system is a useful measure of our academic progress, it does not consider nor value the culture and climate our dedicated staff create in providing the quality of education your children receive.
